Residual Kid might be, errr, kids - but that's the only comment on their ages that I'll ever make, because it would be wholly wrong to peg them as "aren't they good for their age?" They are already a great band, who put on a great show. And now they have a great debut EP - Box - as well. Comprising Ben Redman on drums, Max Redman on bass, Deven Ivy on guitar and Grace London on vocals, keys and guitar, they might one day be the greatest band in the world.

Indie Sounds: So, you just released your Box EP. Why Box?
Grace London: Box is one of the songs on our EP, and we didn't have a name or cover for the record yet, so Deven's dad made a wooden box sort of thing and then stenciled Residual Kid: Box on it. He sent a picture of it to us, and when we saw it we knew it fitted perfectly.
Download Box from iTunes.
IS: You had a good time making the EP?
Deven Ivy: The making of Box was a totally awesome experience. We got the chance to do what a lot of modern bands never get the chance to do - record analog. It was just a lot of fun being out in the studio.
IS: But your EP release party last week turned into a benefit gig. Why?
Ben Redman: Our friend and producer, Jonas Wilson, lost his home and studio - where we recorded Box - in the Bastrop fires, and we wanted to help all of the victims in any way that we could.
Max Redman: Giving back is important to us, and it's a small donation to those who lost so much.
IS: By way of background, how did Residual Kid get started, and how's it been so far?
Ben: Deven and I met at a summer Rock Camp three years ago and started playing music with my brother, as the Flock of Spiders. We met Grace about nine months ago through Jonas, and hit it off musically.
Grace: We've worked really hard, and we're really excited at how accepting the whole Austin music scene has been with us, even though we're kids.
IS: What's next for the band? Gigs, labels, videos, world tours?
Ben: We're playing a $2 Show this Thursday at 29th Street Ballroom, with a young photographer named Jackson Potts, who just did a photo shoot with us for an exhibit. We're talking about music videos and definitely hope for a world tour soon!
Deven: I think we would definitley like to stay as independent as possible. We are just trying to have fun, and see where it gets us.
IS: A final one for each of you: If you could choose one venue to perform at, or one band to open for, or play with ... what or who would it be?
Grace: I would either want to play with Led Zeppelin (but only in the 70s, of course, with Bonzo) or The White Stripes.
Ben: Stubbs (the big stage) and I would love to one day play with Radiohead!
Max: We love playing The Mohawk, and played there with The White White Lights, Ume and Mission of Burma.
Deven: I would like to play with The Intelligence. They are one of the most fearless bands I have ever heard. They are not afraid to try anything.
